Amanda Coulter
Amanda Colter is a 25 year old single mother with 2 children ages 6 and 3 who applied to the M.O.M Scholarship Fund in hopes that she could alleviate some of her financial burdens with school until she’s able to complete her Associates degree in Nursing.
Amanda works 2 jobs, one at night in home health and one during the day where she cleans homes. Amanda found herself in a difficult situation where she was selected to enter her school’s nursing program, but would have to quit her job in order complete this strenuous program. Amanda had to slightly change her graduation date from 2019 to 2020 by instead enrolling into a diploma program instead of her intended degree program because it wouldn’t be financially advantageous to stop working. Amanda found another way to complete her program and continue to work by extending her program time so she can provide for her children. She didn’t allow one obstacle to deter her from continuing her journey.
Her passion, hard work and commitment truly moved the scholarship committee to the point that although she did not meet the qualifications for the M.O.M scholarship, we adamantly gifted her with a one time $250 stipend and purchased all of her children’s school supplies for the year. We hope that this gift will help to alleviate some of your financial stress this year and we look forward to tracking your success and offering our assistance in any way we can as you complete your educational journey.

My name is Chakera Parker and I am 22 years old. I have a 5-year-old daughter named Kayden who motivates me every day to do great things. I graduated from Waccamaw High School as a junior in 2012. I am attending Horry Georgetown Technical College to become a RN. This is my dream career and I am excited to be starting my journey as a nurse with HGTC. Unlike most people, I actually enjoy going to school and I love to learn new things. In my spare time, I like taking walks on the beach, spending time with my family and friends, going to the movies, and re-watching episodes of Grey’s Anatomy. Family is the most important thing to me next to my education. After graduating from HGTC in 2019, I plan to attend Coastal Carolina University to get my BSN and eventually want to get my Masters and become a Neonatal nurse or a Nurse Practitioner.
To me, being a Mother On a Mission means doing everything in your power to be able to provide for your child. It means not using being a mother as an excuse to not become something, but as the driving force and motivation for why you will be successful. Everything that I am and do, I owe to my little girl. If it wasn’t for her I would not be the person that I am today. She is the light of my life and it is my mission as her mother, to make her proud. This is what being a M.O.M. means to me.

Throughout my college experience I’ve been recognized for my academic achievements and honor roll status. I was also elected for the, “Who’s Who Among Students In American Junior Colleges and The National Technical Honor Society. I’m a volunteer for a Human Rights Committee that oversees individuals with disabilities and special needs. I am also an active member in my church, Rehoboth Restoration. I organize and operate the, “Five Loaves and Two Fish” Food Pantry, direct the Joel 2 Praise Team for Young Adults, as well as teach Sunday School to elementary aged youth.
Being the sole parent and provider for my family has influenced me to pursue higher education in order to gain stability and self-sufficiency. I want to encourage and empower my children to set goals and accomplish them to the best of their capabilities. It’s not an easy task being a non-traditional student, it’s very challenging at times, but I know that the rewards of my perseverance will be well worth it in the future, and this is why I believe I exemplify the true meaning of a “Mother On A Mission”. My objective is to stay focused and on task while I transition to the next dimension of my life, while encouraging and empowering others to do the same.
